![]() ![]() I had to work, but they’d get started in the morning, and I’d get there after work. We scheduled an ENTIRE DAY for him to record his parts. Said he needed more time, (Christmas was approaching, and he worked retail, so he was going to get a lot more hours) and asked that we wait til after the holidays.īeginning of January rolls around. The guitar player said he wanted to really study them before recording, so we gave him a few weeks. I recorded the scratch guitars and vocals. Our drummer was also our engineer, and that’s what he does for a living, so he had to squeeze us in when he could. We were playing a lot shows.then it was time to record. He bought one of those super expensive line 6 helix things. I’m gonna get some new gear, and it’ll be way better.” I had a gentle talk with him about it (he’s got a SUPER fragile ego) and he said “yeah, I know. Like imagine Kirk Hammet blasting a solo all over Willie Nelson’s “Buddy.” It just doesn’t work. I’m all for showmanship and ripping guitars, but he was doing things that didn’t make sense, and didn’t fit the music AT ALL. The more people came to our shows, the more he’d start to over play.turn up his gain more.thrash around stage a lot more. We started getting a lot of people coming to our shows.Īnd then things got slowly worse. We fleshed out my 3-chord folk songs into actual interesting songs. I filled out the rest of the band (this part took a long ass time). I told him it wasn’t working, he’s over-playing, a lot of what he’s doing isn’t doesn’t fit the tone of the songs, etc etc etc. And here’s home boy, trying to shred these slash-esque leads and solos. This band is semi-slow, blues based Americana/folk punk, sad bastard kind of jams. It was a genre he wasn’t very experienced in, but he’s a really good guitar player, and possesses skills far beyond my own. My friend was stoked to ay lead guitar for me. After a couple years, I missed playing in a band, so I put one together, using my already established solo stuff. I did a solo thing for awhile because I got tired of dealing with other people. I’ve been in bands for almost 20 years now. So to get to the questions: How have you handled announcements regarding members who were fired? Is there some magical formula that can give the person dignity without lying or going into any details? Would you announce the departure? Should we wait a few months and then recruit? Am I asking too many questions?! We can keep the temporary drummer for playing shows, but not for composing, so we must find a long-term replacement if we want to advance. He's been with us from the beginning, and it seems like there should be some sort of announcement. It also feels weird to announce an opening without addressing the departure itself. We maintained that outside the group, he is a great guy and we want to remain friends.īut now we have bookers contacting us to play concerts at the end of the year and while we've found a temporary drummer to replace him (yes, the drummer knows he's temporary) it seems really violent to advertise an opening when the album isn't even mixed or mastered. ![]() So before we headed back into the studio to record, we had a meeting and outlined all the reasons that it wasn't possible to continue playing with him. Come June, and it is impossible to avoid the topic. This conversation should have taken place in March. Now the intervention was for both attitude and skill. Bad news is that the drum recording went as bad as it could have gone and we had already planned an attitude "intervention" as soon as the album was finished. Good news was that we got a few extra days free once confinement was lifted. ![]() Our studio shut down and everyone was confined. Right in the middle of recording our album, Covid struck. Unfortunately, this comes at a really garbage moment. It was not mutual and the member did not want to leave. My band had to fire one of the core members and founders of the group. I don't know how to announce on social media that we need a replacement. ![]()
